I was excited to hear about the new drink Starbucks® is offering since I am always looking for ways for people to have healthier pick me ups than energy drinks or sodas. Every time there is a new product, skip whatever they are telling you about how awesome it is and go straight to the ingredients. Here is the information from their website:
Ice, Almondmilk [Filtered Water, Almonds, Sugar, Tricalcium Phosphate, Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol)], Brewed Coffee, Banana Date Fruit Blend [Coconut Sugar, Banana Puree, Water, Apple Juice Concentrate, Date Juice Concentrate, Natural Flavors, Spice], Plant-based Protein Blend [Pea Protein, Banana Powder, Brown Rice Protein, Xanthan Gum, Medium Chain Triglycerides (From Palm Oil), Corn Starch, Natural Flavor], Almond Butter [Blanched Almonds, Sunflower Oil].
I am a fan of real ingredients, so I love that the are using real coffee and almond butter! I am not a fan of a lot of added concentrated sugars, and this one has 22 g sugar, which is about the upper limit of what you should have in a whole day. The sugars are from refined sources as well, not a whole banana or a whole date, which would be healthier. I am curious if you can ask for them to leave out the banana date fruit blend, since it is listed separately-I will have to ask them when I go next. There would still be added sugar, but much less.
My whole food recipe recommendation for something like this would be: ice, almond milk (unsweetened), brewed coffee, whole banana, protein powder (unsweet), almond butter, cinnamon, Himalayan pink salt. That sounds better to me!
