By Linda Moore – STOTT Pilates Certified Instructor
You’d probably recognize a Pilates reformer even if you’ve never used one. It’s a rather large machine that consists of a sliding carriage rigged with springs, bars and straps. On the reformer, you lie, kneel, stand and sit to create a balanced body and strong core — or “powerhouse,” as creator Joseph Pilates called it. AYB has two reformers along with a tower attached to each reformer, a Pilates chair, an arc barrel and several mats and balls to complete the studio.
The reformer offers a ton of core-building benefits and more. The combination of the pulley and springs offers more resistance than what you get with just your body weight on a mat. Every exercise builds from your core and incorporates most, if not all the large AND smaller muscles in the body. When we say it’s a total body workout, we mean it!
Any AYB Reformer Pilates class will incorporate lateral flexion, spinal rotation, spinal extension, arm and leg work. There are well over 100 different exercises that Jodi, Joy and I teach to challenge each client in a reformer class. In most sessions, we try to offer at least one new exercise or a different spin on an exercise to challenge our clients.
In the next few weeks, look for short videos demonstrating various exercises on the reformer. Better yet, come give Pilates a try! We now have three STOTT certified instructors to meet just about everyone’s schedule.Tags: Fitness
